MLM Marketing Myths Exposed
The direct marketing association estimates there are over 60 million network marketing distributors worldwide at any given moment.
- Most do not make enough money to cover their autoship and never will.
- Many make a few hundred to a few thousand dollars per month and will never move beyond that.
- A few will stay the course and earn a solid six-figure, multiple six-figure, even 7-figure annual income over time.
So what’s the difference that makes all the difference?
Assuming you are in a great company, with wonderful products and a fantastic compensation plan.
But that’s a given, right?
Not so fast. Because one of the most often overlooked areas of building a successful mlm marketing business is joining an opportunity that puts the of odds of success in your favor.
Here’s what I mean…
12 years ago Lisa and I joined a well-known, highly-rated nutritional company offering vitamins, skin care and weight loss products.
The company was a debt-free, publicly-traded and had a solid ten year track record of growth. So we started building.
- We contacted all our family, friends, and co-workers.
- We held home meetings and team meetings.
- We handed out very expensive magazines and CDs every where we went.
- We did drop cards and tear-sheets and end put personalized license plates on our cars.
- We invested in online lead generation sites and software.
- Built team replicated sites.
- Advertised in newspapers and magazines, and even went door-to-door a few times to speak with top business owners, sales people and professionals.
- We bought dirt-cheap business opportunity seeker leads and sent a ton of email spam.
- We bought very expensive “LIVE PHONE SURVEYED LEADS” and dialed for dollars… and taught our team to do the same thing.
- We spent a fortune LEARNING the skills we needed to effectively prospect and recruit. I mean, seriously, we spent thousands upon thousands of dollars for books, tapes, seminars and bootcamps.
We worked our butts off for three years, sponsored more than 100 people, and SLOWLY climbed the ranks to earning a significant executive income.
But then we decided to take some time off… just a couple months… and during that short break our business went backwards.
Our checks started getting smaller… and smaller… and smaller. Why?
Attrition!
The bottom line was it cost about $240 per month to “stay active” and stay qualified to earn a check with this company.
And since MOST people in network marketing peak when they sign up (meaning they never sponsor a single person, ever!)…
MOST will eventually quit their autoship (usually within the first 90 days!) and…
Unless you are actively building faster than your business is dying… you’re checks will get smaller.
Plain and simple.
Lesson learned…
In order to build a big business fast, you must be offering consumable products at a FAIR market price or attrition will bury you.
Our attrition rate with that company was about 70% per year.
Meaning 70% of everyone who joined eventually canceled their autoship.
So to build this business to the point of creating true time and financial freedom… a true walk away residual income… would require an annual team GROWTH RATE that exceeded the attrition rate. Make sense?
Plus… while WE were serious enough to invest a lot of time, energy and money into our business with the HOPE it would someday become profitable, pay us back and leave us with a nice profit… most people who will join your business are not of the same mindset.
Or perhaps they simply don’t have any money available to budget for mlm marketing.
Either way, it can be very slow going.
MLM Marketing on the Fast Track
About six years ago Lisa and I joined another “start up” company. It was a risk.
All start-ups are risky because a full 56% fail within four years.
Yet we could afford the risk because we were still getting a nice check from the vitamin company. The checks were getting smaller with each passing month… but at least we were getting a nice check.
This time we decided to NOT build our business “belly-to-belly” and decided to focus more on mastering the art and science of mlm marketing – both online and offline.
Meaning we wanted our mlm marketing SYSTEM to generate leads and do most of the heavy lifting for us.
And through a lot of trial and error… we finally “cracked the code” and our business started to grow.
The difference that made the difference?
- Consumable products priced BELOW normal market prices
- Affordable monthly autoship even if not building a business
- Less than 11% annual attrition rate
Plus, we focused most of our time on learning how to leverage the internet and other “direct response” forms of mlm marketing to create a steady flow of leads – and then we simply directed those prospects to a simple presentation.
This left us with a lot of time available to follow up with people to collect a decision.
Yes or no? Are you in or out?
Because sponsoring and recruiting is where ALL the money is in this business.
So you should be spending the majority of the time you have available to build your business sponsoring and recruiting… which means you need leads.
Lots and lots of leads. Constantly.
MLM Marketing Lessons Learned
The composition of our business today is like most profitable network marketing businesses:
- 3% make a significant income
- 7% earn a few hundred or a few thousand per month
- 10% are in profit and are growing
- 80% have done little, if anything
The advantage I have in having a large team is I get to see the “who, what and why” behind growing a profitable business. And what I discovered is a couple things that should be obvious but, at first glance, they aren’t…
- Those who are making money have created or have embraced a mlm marketing system.
- Not everyone builds the same way… but those who are making money have a PLAN and are working their plan consistently.
- Those who are growing their businesses are investing both time and money into their businesses – to buy leads, advertise, tool up for internet-based mlm marketing promotions and more.
- Leaders focus first and foremost on LEAD GENERATION and making new contacts, then they follow up to collect a decision.
- Those who aren’t growing insist they cannot afford to invest in the promotion of their businesses – and once they run out of warm market contacts – their business stops dead.
It’s a catch 22 for those who aren’t making any money… because they don’t have the extra money to invest into their business to help CREATE LEADS… and without a steady stream of new leads, there will be no new business.
MLM Marketing Using Funded Proposals
A few months ago I decided to find out what was available “out there” to help the average struggling network marketer put the odds into their favor.
The PERFECT SYSTEM would be one that provided a proven platform for lead generation, offered the opportunity to create multiple streams of income (in addition to their primary business) and would allow the networker to effectively brand and promote themselves and their opportunity as the solution people were looking for.
I tested four very popular online “lead generation” systems. I won’t mention them by name here. But what I will tell you is…
- One of the systems offered a number of generic business opportunity seeker splash pages with a ton of contact management features in the back office. The multiple streams of income came in from offering the same generic system to people, a subscription to buy leads, and a professional high-speed phone dialer. Bottom line: The pages did not convert, personal branding was a joke, and all the bells and whistles were basically worthless.
- Another program offered virtually the same thing – a ton of generic, even company specific splash pages to help collect leads. That was about it. You had no way of changing anything except to add your photo and personal contact information. Bottom line: essentially worthless. Though you could earn a few affiliate dollars promoting this supposed lead generation system.
- Yet another was put together by a very well-known young super-star. These pages do convert and you can add your own videos or copy or whatever to create a nice mlm marketing funnel. The downside is, once a person signs up, the branding was all about the young super-star. Which is great for him… but not so great for you if you. Bottom line: lot’s of sharp mlm marketers are using this system with success yet the price they pay is to much. Not in dollars and cents, but in giving up their credibility and authority to the young super-star.
MLM Marketing Magic
The final system I tested took me by surprise!
So much so that we have now embraced this system as our primary mlm marketing platform of choice… and HIGHLY RECOMMEND it to everyone on our team and everyone who is truly serious about taking their network marketing business to the next level.
Because it really does not get any better than this.
